Who I want to become…

A look at my future career goals

My Story

Ever since I was little, I never knew exactly what I wanted to do. I grew up dreaming that I would become a vet just so I could spend my days with animals. Well as I began to grow up, I learned that being a vet doesn’t mean you just pet dogs all day. It’s a lot more than that. Once I graduated high school, I knew college was the next step for me. I decided Kutztown University mainly because I was recruited for volleyball. Coming into college I knew I wanted to major in something related to business. I never really had an interest in anything else which I think was because my dad success in the business world encouraged me to purse business. After a semester into my freshman year I declared my major as Finance. I am now a junior and over halfway through undergraduate degree. Finance to me is more than just money. I believe it is the right major for me because there are so many opportunities in the business world. I am not 100% sure which path in the finance world I want to take but because of variety of jobs I know I will find my passion somewhere. Last semester I took a personal finance class which I found very interesting to me. After taking that class, I was considering changing my major to personal finance but decided against it because if I wanted to become a CFP I would need to get certification after college, which is fine but once again I’m not 100% set on personal finance as a career. This summer I’m planning on getting an internship that helps me either figure what I might want to do or helps me figure out what I don’t want to do. But I am happy with my major and am looking forward to the future I have in the finance world.

Trade Publications: Post Two

Trade publications in the finance world are so important for not only people in the finance industry but everyone involved in any type of investing, banking, etc. By keeping up with recent news related to finance it can help people be more knowledgeable on how to make more money. In the finance industry, prices change every day, all day long, so it’s a must to keep up with the news. One trade publication that I looked into was Forbes. Forbes is a magazine that keeps up with recent changes in the business world. It is one of the most popular business magazines out there. It explores many different topics such as money, business, lifestyle, innovation, and a lot more. Forbes is a great magazine because it shows the importance of everything relating to business and how it effects our society. I decided to click on the personal finance section and found articles from student loans to credit scores. If I go into personal finance in the future, I will need to keep up with recent news to help clients find the best options with their finances. Another trade publication I looked into was Consumer Reports. Consumer Reports is a different look at business and gives unbiased reviews on products. I think it is more related to marketing than finance, but it is important especially if you own a business and want to see how consumers feel about your products. It can really help business fix their products or find out about what their competitors are doing. I think this could be a good publication for me to keep up with in the future especially if my job has to do with marketing. Because I am not one hundred percent which part of the business world I want to be involved in the future, keeping up with recent news will help me find what I really enjoy.

After reading over The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, I looked over a few different jobs that I am interested and learned about the statistics of the jobs in 2018. The first job I looked at was a Personal Financial Planner. The median pay was higher than I expected and the need for PFP’s is growing. Those are both good news for me if I want to become a Personal Financial Planner. What I really like about Personal Financial Planner’s is a lot are self-employed, which is definitely a goal in the future for me. I also checked out Financial Examiners and was impressed by the need for Examiners is also growing at 7% just like Personal Financial Planners. There are not as many Financial Examiners as there are Personal Financial Planners, but this occupation does have a lot of benefits if I could get involved in it. Overall this website really helped me become more knowledgeable on the two occupations I am looking into. I also watched Kare Anderson Ted Talk on Being an opportunity maker and how important it can be to get out there. What I got out of the ted talk is that you need to interact with more people than just people you see every day. By doing that you can improve your knowledge and develop stronger connections with the world. During her talk, she mentions how we are all experts at something and that really stood out to me because I never really thought of that before. It is so important in the business world to create relationships with everyone because there are so many aspects to run a business. There are sales, marketing, accounting and many other roles in a business and no one knows everything about every aspect nor has the time to run the whole business. I think this ted talk helped me realize the importance of developing relationships with others and how it can help you advance in your life.

All of this week’s readings are important resources in helping me find my future career. The first article ” 6 Things You Must Do To Get Your First Job After College”, really reminded me of what I still need to get done before I graduate college. It talked about LinkedIn and WordPress which I already did both of them but I still need get an internship for this summer. I have been applying and reaching out to different companies in hopes in finding a good internship. The other two articles “10 Key Job Search Tips for New Graduates” and “10 Job Search Mistakes of New College Grads”, helped me realize I still have a lot to learn about the right way to find a job. What really stuck out to me is how you are suppose to adjust your resume depending on the company you send it out to. I always made the mistake of just sending it out everywhere and not changing it but after reading the two articles I realized I also shouldn’t just send my resume everywhere. It is just unnecessary work to send out my resume to jobs that I am not qualified for. It also said in one of the articles that you need to practice interview which I’ve never done before. I usually just wing it but if I can get some practice in that could help me in the future. Another step to finding my future job was I need to keep up with checking my emails, phone calls, and recent job posts. I keep up with my school emails, but I need to keep up with looking for an internship on job search websites. The article emphasized the importance of applying for jobs right when they pop up because it is more likely to get the job if you apply early.

After attending a Career Development Event I received a lot of useful information that can help me in finding a job in the future. The event that I attended was “How to Work a Career Fair”, which basically went over how to do well at a career fair. I learned how important preparing for a career fair is which I never knew before. I didn’t know that you were suppose to research the companies that are going to be there and ask questions to the recruiters. I also did not know you need to dress up for these fairs, so you look professional. I am planning on going to the Kutztown Job Fair this year in hopes in getting an internship so thanks to this event I feel a lot more prepared for the fair. The career development event also showed me how their main goals are to help students with finding jobs in the future which is something that I worry about a lot. I want to get more involved in the Career Development Center, so I am more prepared for the future. One thing I really struggle with is getting very anxious when talking to new people. So, after hearing that the Career center has events for students to become more comfortable with interviewing I know these events could help me with communicating. After looking over the informational interviewing assignment, I became pretty nervous because like I said before I struggle with interviewing. But I do know that this assignment will help me in the near future with becoming a better interviewer. I do not know exactly who I want to interview with yet, but I need to get started on this assignment. Interviewing for me is one of the most stressful parts of searching for a new job. I am fine with sending emails, doing applications, reviewing my resume but once I have to face to face communicate with someone the anxiety starts up. And I know that is the most important part of searching for a job that is why these events and assignment will help me out.

After reading over this week’s readings, I learn about email etiquette, personal branding, and social media mistakes. Which readings that really stood out to me was the articles on email etiquette. I have learned about the proper ways to send email before, but these articles really went into depth about the correct way to communicate with people through email. The article, “15 Email Etiquette Rules Every Professional Should Know” really had some good information that I will take into the future. The first rule the article went over was having a clear subject line which sometimes I just write my name there. Now that I read that article, I should really put better subjects in my emails. Another rule that stood out to me was adding a subject block to your emails. I think now that I am in college subject blocks aren’t as important but when I get a real job it could be important. Another article that could possibly help me out in the future is, “4 Times You Should Absolutely Not Send That Email”. This article taught me not to send long, drawn out emails because you need to just get your point or question across. Which makes sense because an email isn’t an essay and doesn’t need to be drawn out like that. The other article that had some good information was, ” 7 Social Media Mistakes Job Seekers Must Avoid”. Before I read this article, social media to me was all about just interacting with my friends. But it is very important for people seeking jobs because a lot of employers interact over social media. This article made me realize that I need to look more professional and put my professional information out there. This could help me find my future employer. But after reading all these articles, I learned a lot of information that I should carry with me in finding my future job.
